Gaol
Created in collaboration with photographer Amé Rowley-Evans, Gaol examines the Pendle Witch Trials of 1612 through a blend of photography and archival material, offering a visual and historical exploration of one of England’s most infamous witch hunts. Through historically influenced medium-format black-and-white film photography and detailed research, the book investigates the intersection of superstition, fear, and injustice that shaped the fates of the accused. The photographs are accompanied by manipulated archival material, providing glimpses into the lives and perception of the accused witches. Printed in Bath, England, and meticulously hand-bound with a screen-printed cover, Gaol is a carefully crafted tribute to those who suffered, serving as a reflection on the enduring consequences of the Church and mass hysteria, as well as the dangers of superstition and the vulnerability of marginalized people, particularly women.
