In a few hours

“In a Few Hours is a continuation of experiments I have been doing in composite photography. This project is a collection of 10 photograph compositions that show the passage of time through self-portraiture. These images depict time though the movement of light, often relying on various positions of the sun to have day and night share a single frame or show the movement of a shadow or highlight. By keeping the camera in the same positions for a long duration of time I could capture the same frame at varying times of day and utilized photoshop to compose an impossible composition showing progression in time. I looked at Gregory Crewdson’s Twilight to introduce a surreal artificiality to my environmental portraits and Hiroshi Sugimoto’s Theaters to study how he approached the idea of passing time. I injected myself into these frames to give the understanding of where I was for a specific amount of time, showing the dedication to create these surreal frames.

Starting this project, I thought this series would be about cityscapes with every building having a hard transition between times of day. Pivoting to use smooth transitions in tandem with self-portraiture was the best possible outcome for this project and was more beneficial to what I wanted to convey. I think that everything from the moving highlights to the overlapping tight portrait came out better than I expected. This project shows the importance of spending time on the things you care about. As an artist the time you put into your work reflects the quality and meaningfulness of your work.”
